Abstract

Sleep disorder is a rampant problem in the US, with over 40 million Americans currently diagnosed according to the NIH. There is a clear association between sleep disorder and a wide range of other human disorders -performance deficiencies, psychiatric illnesses, heart disease, obesity and more - but in spite of this there is not yet a convenient overview on the market detailing the impact of obesity, age, diabetes and diet on sleep duration and attendant health outcomes. This volume focuses on the interaction between sleep and these factors, with special attention being paid to the potential

Abstract

This volume examines the ways in which people engage with therapeutic practices, such as life coaching, mindfulness, complementary and alternative medicine, sex and relationship counselling, spiritual healing and self-tracking. It investigates how human and non-human actors, systems of thought and practice are assembled and interwoven in therapeutic engagements, and traces the situated, material and political dimensions of these engagements. By focusing on lived experiences through ethnographically informed case studies, the book elucidates the diverse forms, meanings and embodied effects of therapeutic engagements in different settings, as well as their potential for both oppressive and subversive social change. In this way, Assembling Therapeutics contributes to our understanding of multiple modes of healing, self-knowledge and power in contemporary societies.

Abstract

This landmark text is dedicated to the conversation had between a primary care physician and a dermatologist that is a true reflection of the way medicine works when these physicians collaborate on the same case. The book uses actual case studies from the authors' offices and provides an accurate and real portrayal of the types of skin conditions primary care physicians encounter. Answering questions such as when to treat, how to treat, when to refer, when to biopsy, and when to reassure, this book informs and educates primary care physicians with a dermatologist’s perspective. Top 50 Dermatology Case Studies for Primary Care gives the reader an entirely new vantage point from which to view dermatologic cases, and together with one of New York City's top dermatologists, the authors look at the same case, the same patient, and compare what each did or would have done. Written for family medicine and internal medicine physicians, residents and providers, Top 50 Dermatology Case Studies for Primary Care proves to be an invaluable resource in their day-to-day practices.

Abstract

This book describes the latest advances in health education and patients' self-management, addressing core questions such as: How can you motivate a patient to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and how can you support their self-management? Though there is a broad consensus within the nursing profession on the importance of health promotion and the promotion of self-management, nursing professionals often struggle with the underlying theoretical and practical aspects involved, as well as the right type of intervention to use and how to evaluate the results. The book departs from international trends, which primarily underline the importance of prevention and focus on such issues as the increase in the number of people with chronic health problems and co-morbidity, the empowerment of patients, and the technological developments in the health care system. In the first chapters, it examines health at the micro-, meso- and macro-level, combined with epidemiological health indicators. The following chapters focus on prevention, health promotion and self-management, while also broadly discussing prevention. The book then turns to the development and purpose of, as well as plans for, health promotion and health education. The Intervention Mapping protocol is the starting point, addressing questions such as how to motivate a patient to other, healthier behavior. Subsequently, the field of health promotion is extended to disease prevention, patient education and self-management. On the basis of patients’ needs, the book describes methods and interventions to promote self-management in detail. Self-management and chronic health problems are also highlighted, along with the patient’s social network in connection with self-management and eHealth. Lastly, the book explores the relationship between nursing and health promotion, as well as disease prevention, diagnoses, interventions and care results. Additionally, this edition includes two trainings on 'Promoting the self-management of the patient ' and on 'What is the role of the nursing professional in promoting self-management of the patient?'. This book is intended for bachelor and master courses for nursing professionals and is linked to the CanMeds competencies of health promoters and reflective evidence-based working professionals. .

Abstract

“Professor Rodham has written a fascinating book that challenges, quite rightly, the current beliefs and misconceptions around the self-management approach to chronic pain. This excellent book views it more as a supportive partnership than yet something else the individual with pain has to motivate themselves to do. A welcome addition to the improving the lives of people with chronic pain.” (Dr Sue Peacock, Consultant Health Psychologist, UK) This book critiques the current approach to the self-management of persistent pain. The drive towards self-management of chronic pain is flourishing as healthcare systems struggle to facilitate the care of those with long term health conditions. In this book Karen Rodham argues that albeit an empowering idea, self-management has not yet been fully translated from idea to practice and as such, runs the risk of blaming and shaming the person living with a chronic condition for failing to manage their condition effectively. She contends that the additional stress of this tension may in fact worsen their condition. Drawing from the research evidence as well as her practice experience, she advocates a move away from the terms ‘self’ and ‘management’ towards a more collaborative approach. One which takes account of the life-context of the person who is living with persistent pain. This book explores the shortcomings of the tendency to focus on self-management without taking into account life context and considers how we got here and what can be done. It will be a valuable resource to researchers and practitioners, especially in the field of health psychology. Karen Rodham is Professor of Health Psychology at Staffordshire University, UK. Her research focuses on how people cope with challenging health conditions. Her interest in pain self-management stems from her practice experience as a health psychologist working in the NHS with people living with complex regional pain syndrome (CPRS).

Abstract

Concepts of ‘balance’ have been central to modern politics, medicine and society. Yet, while many health, environmental and social challenges are discussed globally in terms of imbalances in biological, social and ecological systems, strategies for addressing modern excesses and deficiencies have focused almost exclusively on the agency of the individual. Balancing the Self explores the diverse ways in which balanced and unbalanced selfhoods have been subject to construction, intervention and challenge across the long twentieth century. Through original chapters on subjects as varied as obesity control, fatigue and the regulation of work, and the physiology of exploration in extreme conditions, the volume analyses how concepts of balance and rhetorics of empowerment and responsibility have historically been used for a variety of purposes, by a diversity of political and social agencies. Historicising present-day concerns, as well as uncovering the previously hidden interests of the past, this volume’s wide-ranging discussions of health governance, subjectivity and balance will be of interest to historians of medicine, sociologists, social policy analysts, and social and political historians alike.

Abstract

From self-help books and nootropics, to self-tracking and home health tests, to the tinkering with technology and biological particles - biohacking brings biology, medicine, and the material foundation of life into the sphere of »do-it-yourself«. This trend has the potential to fundamentally change people's relationship with their bodies and biology but it also creates new cultural narratives of responsibility, authority, and differentiation. Covering a broad range of examples, this book explores practices and representations of biohacking in popular culture, discussing their ambiguous position between empowerment and requirement, promise and prescription.

Abstract

Medical information is now widely available on the Internet and through telephone helplines such as NHS Direct and the focus on patient self care is likely to increase. Clinicians in all specialties will often encounter patients who have made self-directed searches for medical information prior to the clinical encounter. Teleneurology by Internet and Telephone is a study of patient information-seeking behaviour in neurology patients prior to referral from primary to secondary care. The book analyses frequency of Internet access and use, and of telephone helpline awareness and use. It also explores use of these modalities over time, use according to patient gender and age and by gender and age over time.  Teleneurology by Internet and Telephone is an accessible overview of the utility of these modalities of health information provision and will be of interest not only to neurologists and clinicians in other specialities but also to public health researchers, sociologists and political scientists with an interest in questions of health care provision.
